Data Transfer
One way of achieving accuracy and efficiency is to import the shipment data from an electronic source rather than manually entering the data. If an importer or vendor can provide the information but it isn't in the format you need a small program or conversion routine can be used to automate the process. I have experience in routines that convert between EDIFACT, XML, Text (delimted or fixed) as well as various other formats.
In some cases the solution requires additional manipulation such as correction of country codes, cross-referencing SKU or part numbers to client based reference numbers or loading a description for the part number.
Another situation that may require specialized data manipulation is during a client audit. The data the client provides to substantiate an adjustment may need to be merged with the data from the broker to generate an acceptable format for a refund or adjustment. Depending on the client there are situations where their in-house programs do not generate data exports that are easy to deal with. I have had extensive experience in cross-referencing multiple data files from clients to the data from the broker to generate "blanket claims" that are acceptable to customs. Optimization routines will reduce the amount payable in these situations by taking advantage of minimum payment or interest amounts.
